Itchy eyes are usually caused by allergies. Along with itching, the eyes may become red, puffy, and secrete mucous that causes the lids to stick in the morning. Eyelids may become swollen. Other allergy symptoms may be present if the sufferer is allergic to seasonal pollens, molds, dust mites, smoke, or other airborne particles. One can develop an allergy to almost anything, including fabrics, cosmetics, soaps and detergents. Eye drops and contact lens solutions may contain ingredients that cause allergic reactions.

Allergic reactions are best managed by eliminating the causative factor whenever possible. Since this is often difficult to do, one must search for relief elsewhere. Avoid rubbing the eyes, as this can escalate the allergic response. Mild itching may be temporarily abated with over-the-counter allergy drops such as Opcon A or even non-preserved artificial tear drops or cold compresses. Oral antihistamines taken for more severe allergy symptoms may reduce the itchy eyes. Symptoms that don’t respond to these simple therapies should be evaluated by your eye doctor. The doctor may be able to identify the cause and recommend an effective prescription medication that will calm your symptoms and prevent further complications.
